Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Dündar’s project on “Semantically conditioned multi-modal image inpainting” received TÜBİTAK 3501 support.

Image inpainting, the task of filling missing pixels in the most realistic manner, is a difficult task requiring a high level of understanding of the scene. A successful image inpainting algorithm provides an important image editing tool that can be used by daily users as well as architects and designers. Recently, deep learning methods have also dominated this task as it happened in other computer vision tasks. Even though much progress has achieved in this domain, results are far from perfect. In this project, a multimodal representation for semantically conditioned image  inpainting algorithm will be designed to synthesize diverse results and provide controllobility to the user of the inpainted area.

CS Student won the first prize in OBSS Code Master 2021 Competition

CS Student won the first prize in OBSS Code Master 2021 Competition

CS Student Ziya Mukhtarov won the first prize in OBSS Code Master 2021 Competition. Participants show their algorithm and coding skills in the competition. The competition, organized by OBSS, took place in two stages. In the first stage, local competitions at various universities were held. The winners of the first stage competed in the second and final stage. The winner of the grand prize in the final stage has been our student Ziya Mukhtarov. He won 100.000 TL. We congratulate him for winning the competition.

CS Fair 2021 took place on May 7, 2021 over Zoom platform.

CS Fair 2021 took place on May 7, 2021 over Zoom platform.
CSFair 2021, Senior Project Fair of Computer Engineering Department, took place on May 7, 2021, between 12:30-5:00pm.

Due to covid pandemic, CSFair was not a physical event; instead, we organized a virtual CSFair using the Zoom system.

CSFair included senior design project demos and presentations, short talks, project and personal award ceremonies, and a lot of fun. Our students and faculty, company representatives, and student families attended the event. We  hosted our guests in Zoom system.

32 Projects participated. Each project had its own zoom meeting room for interactive demos, presentations and discussions. Awards were given to the  projects in 8 categories. The awards were sponsored by companies. Additionally, awards were given to outstanding teaching assistants.

Since 2012, innovation is key in senior projects  of CS Department.  Students come up with Project ideas themselves and also get feedback from innovation experts working at different companies.

The following projects (teams) won awards this year:

Sibel Özelçi Best Senior Design Project Award: OverSeer. A navigation application for visually impaired people.

Innovation Award: Outletter. It is cross-platform mobile application that acts as a perfect shopping companion and helps users in making informed choices about the products they are trying to buy.

Data Science Award: VERITAS. A platform that can do fact checking on video speeches using deep learning techniques.

Wide Impact Award: Here! A video conference platform for educational needs of students and instructors, that includes features such as virtual TA, video analysis, real-time feedback.

Social Impact Award: WoGuard. A mobile application to increase the safety of women while at home or traveling. It includes emergency buttons to inform registered contacts.

User Experience Award: Willow. A browser software that aids in browsing and keeping track of web  pages using  graph-based visual navigation features.

Mobile Award: Gymtor. An AI-based fitness assistant application that uses computer vision algorithms to improve the quality of the exercises done by the users.

Marketability Award: Menüfacture. A restaurant management software that is compatible across mobile and web platforms, providing small restaurant owners with a business management toolbox to automate restaurant operations with the minimum customer contact possible.

Lori Russell Dağ received 2021 Bilkent University Distinguished Teaching Award

Lori Russell Dağ received 2021 Bilkent University Distinguished Teaching Award

Lori Russell Dağ, instructor in Computer Engineering Department,  received 2021 Bilkent University Distinguished Teaching Award.

Lori joined Bilkent University in Spring 2001. Since then, she did extraordinary contributions to our department and Bilkent University in terms of teaching in many different ways. She has been teaching various introductory programming courses including CS101, CS115,   CS125,  and CS123.

She is a member of ACM and she chaired ACM-W Europe Chapters Working Group in 2016 and 2017. She worked to encourage and support the establishment of ACM-
Women student and professional chapters throughout Europe.

Bilkent University uses a nomination-based teaching awards procedure, which provides the teaching awards committee with documentation from students, alumni, and colleagues, uses explicit criteria and requires that nominators address the criteria, takes a long-term view and assesses teaching over time and over a number of different courses. A process that results in more thought about teaching by nominators, faculty committees, Department Chairs, and Deans is expected to raise the profile of teaching at Bilkent and is likely to improve teaching at Bilkent.

Bilkent University Distinguished Teaching Awards for 2021 are presented to the recipients on graduation day.
